Inflammation plays an important role in maintaining the body’s homeostasis. It repairs the damaged tissues of the body resulting from injury or infection. In addition, a diverse array of diseases like hepatitis, arthritis and colitis has been reported and described to be associated with inflammatory processes. Some autoimmune diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) emerge by the influence of numerous genes in complex environmental situations belongs to inflammation. The currently available processes for curing inflammation and related disorders facilitate the use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Moreover, intolerable side effects are also associated with the consumption of these medications. It is well known that phenolic compounds, largely present in vegetables and fruits, serve as an integral part of normal human diet besides having great medicinal value. These are considered to reflect a variety of anti-inflammatory properties, and can be used as an alternate natural source for the prevention of chronic inflammatory disorders. This mini-review summarized the anti-inflammatory benefits of plants derived very prominent dietary polyphenolic compounds particularly, Oleocanthal, Curcumin, Resveratrol and Quercetin.

Friends kept asking me to suggest my best natural sources to boost my daily wellbeing as preventive health measures, so this is what I came up with as my First Aid Natural Holistic Kit.  

Rescue Remedy

Bach Rescue RemedyAlthough there is no scientific evidence recorded, Bach Flower Rescue Remedy is one of the most sought-after natural remedies, created by the English homeopath Edward Bach.
The remedy consists of 5 remedies:  Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Clematis, Impatiens, Cherry Plum and brandy (27%).

My experience with Rescue Remedy:
I have had good experiences using Rescue Remedy for my cat.  The first time, it was when I had to bring her with me abroad and she showed anxiety behaviors the entire week before leaving, sniffing suitcases and running around the house non-stop. I started giving it to her 2 days before the flight and it really helped her calm down.  The day of the trip, she behaved unbelievably fine, even when going through TSA, in the plane and through customs.  I have also used it during heavy rains and thunderstorms. It works! She goes to her bed and stays calms as if nothing. My daughter who usually becomes very nervous before a class presentation, used it before and during her presentation and felt at ease.

Directions: to be used daily when dealing with any type of stressful situations, sleep issues, emotional challenges or to prevent anxiety. For example: a test, an oral presentation, an interview, a health issue, a trip, a divorce, or a move.

Use: spray on top and bottom of tongue for best absorption.
Rescue Remedy is more a mystic and spiritual remedy. The magic behind it is that it works with the flower’s vibrational and positive transmission of nature’s energy.

Essential Oils

Clove essential oil - First aid kit

Clove Syzygium aromaticum:

This wonderful spice has been used for many centuries to preserve food and for its remarkable healing properties: rich antioxidant (high polyphenol content; its anti-oxidant effect is higher than in many veggies, fruits or species), antifungal, anti-microbial (against bacterial and fungal strains), anti-nociceptive (used as analgesic for example for tooth pain) anti-viral (against herpes strains) and little evidence exists that clove works as anti-histamines to keep you clear of sinus.  Clove essential oil has also been used as an insecticide and larvicidal.
Cloves has great soothing and relaxing intestinal inner-lining properties that aid with digestion and gas or bloating issues. Under others, it helps kill parasites and bacteria. It has also anti-clotting properties
When topically applied, this essential oil contributes to relieve inflammation pain-related conditions, such as arthritis and rheumatism.

My experience with clove essential oil:
I rubbed clove essential oil on my daughter’s gums when she was teething, in combination with coconut oil. The numbing effect worked fast. I also used it to relieve earache by mixing 2 drops combined with coconut oil, warmed it, soaked it with a cotton ball, which I put in her ear.  Symptoms significantly improved the following day.

Side effects: always consult with an herbal specialist, since it should not be combined with other medication such as blood thinners or an anti-clotting drugs.  Not recommended for children younger than 12.  Not to use for at least 2-weeks prior to a surgery.  Be mindful of the dose when applying on skin, since it can cause burns or rashes.


Lavender essential oil - First aid holistic kit

Lavender Lavandula angustifolia:

Although there are 39 species, this is the most common type of lavender grown and people call it often English lavender although it is of Mediterranean origin.
Lavender has some wonderful qualities: first of all, our noses don’t go wrong when we record its strong clean and refreshing aroma.  You can find their popular herb sachets in stores, closets and drawers worldwide.  It’s gentle sedative heling induce relaxation and alleviate stress, anxiety and even insomnia.
It has been shown to act effectively and immediately when treating depression versus using slow effecting adaptogens or antidepressants tonics.
It is used for digestive disorders such as nausea, flatulence, bloating, IBS or to relieve gas). Due to its bitterness, it is also used to stimulate the liver and bile.
It has anti-inflammatory properties and it is also a traditional headache remedy when used as an herbal tea or in form of essential oil by massaging on temples.
Lavender infusion:  also useful as a douche for bacterial vaginosis or vaginal yeast infections.

My experience with lavender essential oil:
It gives me an immediate calming effect when I rub it in my wrists or feet. Excellent anti-bacterial: mix at least 10 drops in a spray bottle with distilled water and spray on bedsheets, pillows, carpets.  We also use lavender drops to calm a bee sting or any other insect bite, as it also alleviates the swelling or itching.  It is also effective to decrease a sun burn.

Side effects: none. Something to consider is that the long-term use of lavender, specially with dry mucus membranes and dry skin could produce a too drying effect.



Chamomille German essential oil - first aid holistic kitChamomile German Matricaria recutita

Chamomile, considered among the most versatile therapeutic herbs used for centuries worldwide offers numerous healing properties:  high in antioxidants, an allergy fighter, sooths muscle spasms and is a pain reliever, natural anti-inflammatory (fights free radicals and prevents cells from mutating), anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, menstrual and PMS disorders, helps cure insomnia and is a relaxant, reduces anxiety and depression, helps treat colds, fever, relieves digestive issues (diarrhea, gas, vomiting, leaky gut issues, IBS, acid reflux, nausea, and is a good  liver cleanse. Other benefits: aids in treating wounds and skin issues, ulcers and hemorrhoids.

My experience with chamomile herbs:
It comes always handy when experiencing any sort of indigestion such as nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, motion sickness, cramping, constipation or other pain. It is a calming relaxant for any type of situation or to induce sleep. It is also helpful when experiencing any type of pain or swelling. Chamomile also helped clear up my pink eye, by placing chamomile tea bags on my eyes.

Side effects: none when used as an herb.  If used as essential oil, it should not be ingested.  When applied topically, always start in a small area to make sure you are not reactive. Don’t use it with when experiencing seasonal allergy symptoms.


peppermint essential oil - first aid holistic kitPeppermint Mentha ×piperitaz: 

Its name is actually latin, which is a cross-breed between Spearmint and Water Mint. Its herbal tea is one of the most popular teas used worldwide.  Known as a digestive and gastrointestinal reliever (menthol is the key factor of its organic structure) and carminative by promoting healthy bowel movements.  Since it is also known to be an analgesic, it aids in soothing cramps, gas, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation and overall indigestion.  It is a refreshing and relaxing health booster, helps stop inflammation, alleviates pain, refreshes breath (mentholated flavor and antibacterial properties kill germs that leave breath clean), immune system booster (antibacterial benefits alleviate coughs, fevers, colds) and helps contribute with weight loss (by smelling the aroma of peppermint).  More benefits: it boosts the respiratory system. It reduces nausea and vomiting or motion ailments.  It relieves mental stress. It definitely helps improve the overall system.

My experience with peppermint herbs:
It has served for all different types of purposes in our daily lives: it offers a refreshing, cooling effect and it is my primary choice for colds, coughs, sore throat or mouth infections, respiratory or digestive issues, menstrual cramps and headaches. As far as peppermint essential oils, I especially like smelling it when I need immediate mental focus, alertness and energy.

Side effects:  menthol could cause allergic reactions or heartburn.


yarrow herb remedyYarrow Achillea millefolium.

‘Achillea’ means ‘ancient hero’; as such, this herb was used in the ancient Greek civilization to treat skin wounds and avoid infections. This is another herb with exceptional benefits:
It is anti-bacterial and antiseptic, since it helps stop the bleeding. Native Americans chewed or stewed their stalk causing the sweat to stop colds or fever or produced pulp to apply on sprains, bruises or swelling.
-boosts digestion and aids in the prevention of gallstones by spurring the bile flow (cholagogue effect) out of the gallbladder
-aids with enzymes secretion and to increase appetite
-helps relief arthritis (anti-inflammatory)
-serves as a uterine tonic
-serves as a decongestant as it reliefs sinus infections (sputum) and coughs.  Serves as expectorant.
-expectorant for colds
-its astringent qualities aid in relieving allergies (nasal secretions and watery eyes due to dust, mold, pollen)
-as an infusion, yarrow helps heal skin issues, for example, eczema

My experience with yarrow herbs:
Yarrow was also among my favorite herbs when my daughter was younger to help relieve colds, sore throat, flu or fevers.  It was also valuable for any small accidents to treat a wound, bleeding or infection.

Side effects: not recommended for a longer period since it could cause rashes. Not to use while pregnant


Arnica 30c - first aid holistic kitArnica 30c Urtica urens

Arnica is an ancient homeopathic remedy used in the European Alps and also by Native Americans since 1500s. It can be used homeopathically but also topically, when there is no open wound or burned skin. Essential for a first aid kit, Arnica relieves bruising, pain, swelling from injuries such as contusions, sprains, fractures, falls, accidents, bruises.  It is also effected for over-exercising or muscular pain and stiffness. It is also a good natural solution for arthritis.

It is widely used by sports people, trainers, athletes, coaches and some do even use it as a prevention method.

My experience with Arnica:
I suggest using both, topically and Arnica 30c pellets. During a recent surgery, I started using pellets 2 days prior to surgery and during 7 days.  I felt it helped decrease the inflammation considerably.  My mom recent fell and broke her nose.  We immediately applied Arnica gel in combination with ice during several days.  There was not large evidence of bruising or skin color changes.

Side effects: Arnica is toxic and cannot be ingested except as a homeopathy remedy.  It must be used under supervision of an herbalist specialist if taken internally. Not to use while pregnant or nursing.


Other useful & beneficial natural remedies to further include in my first aid natural holistic kit:

Coconut oil: great antibacterial, antifungal, skin softener, regulates blood sugar and hormones, kills candida and whitens teeth. It helps increase basal body temperature and metabolism which is beneficial for low thyroid.
Cinnamon oil: stimulates circulation and immune system, lowers inflammation and fights free radicals, parasites and viruses. Help balance blood sugar in Diabetes Type II.
Calendula: rich anti-inflammatory properties, anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-spasms, fights hemorrhoids, wounds or ulcers, and great astringent used for oral health.
Echinacea capsules and Elderberry liquid herbal extract: helps boost immune system
Apple cider vinegar: optimal for a health alkalinized pH, relieves digestive issues, alleviates skin rashes and aids with detoxification
Turmeric, Reishi and Vitamin C capsules: rich antioxidants and anti-inflammatories
Probiotics: essential to consume to daily to regulate and balance gut flora, while boosting the immune system
Baking soda: good for acidity, heartburn and urinary tract infections
Chicken or vegetable Broth: this is my final magical suggestion for an optimal functioning of the immune system and general wellbeing.

Important: seek immediate urgent care when you notice serious signs, such as  high temperature (adults +103F and children +101F), severe headache or stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, open wounds or infections, shortness of breath, pneumonia, pulmonary embolus, extreme hot and sweating.
